Ionotropic glutamate receptors

Ionotropic glutamate receptors are a type of ligand-gated ion channel that are activated by the neurotransmitter glutamate . They are widely distributed throughout the central nervous system and play a crucial role in regulating neuronal excitability . Ionotropic glutamate receptors are composed of four or five subunits arranged around a central pore, with each subunit containing three transmembrane domains and a large extracellular domain that contains the binding site for glutamate . There are three main types of ionotropic glutamate receptors: AMPA receptors, NMDA receptors, and kainate receptors .
