Overview

Beryllium fluoride (BeF2) has a variety of applications across different fields. In the study of thermodynamic analysis of batteries, it is used to determine the energy density. In protein crystallography, it is used as a substitute for phosphate and in conjunction with ADP to inhibit protein action and crystallize proteins in the bound state. Beryllium fluoride is also used as a precursor in the production of beryllium metal, a catalyst in organic synthesis, and in the manufacturing of beryllium oxide. Due to its high refractive index, it is used in the production of optical devices like lenses, mirrors, and prisms. Beryllium fluoride has also been found to be an effective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, a nerve impulse regulator, and can affect the activity of other proteins like phosphodiesterase, which is involved in nucleotide breakdown.
