Reagent: 3% sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg)
A. Female Wistar rats weighing about 300 g were anesthetized intraperitoneally with 3% sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg).
B. Bilateral ovaries were excised by open-abdominal surgery under aseptic conditions.
C. After the operation, the rats were kept in separate cages at room temperature, and were free to ingest water and food.
D. Dual-photon bone mineral density analysis showed a decrease in the amount of bone mineral; histological examination showed a decrease in the number of bone trabeculae and thinning of bone cortex.
