Alkyl groups can be connected to benzene molecules through an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction called a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. One example is the introduction of methyl groups into the benzene ring. Theπelectrons of the benzene ring attack the electrophilic reagent to form a non aromatic carbocation.
