Properties:
Non-toxic and odorless; appears as an off-white or pale yellow powder, soluble in acids, insoluble in water, alkalis and organic solvents.
Applications of Chitosan in the Pharmaceutical Industry:
As specified in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (Volume IV), chitosan is used as a pharmaceutical excipient, disintegrant, thickener and other pharmaceutical adjuvants.
Carrier MaterialChitosan, as a pharmaceutical carrier, can stabilize the active ingredients of drugs, promote drug absorption, delay or control drug dissolution rate, and facilitate targeted drug delivery to the target organs. In addition, it exhibits acid-resistant and anti-ulcer properties, which can prevent drugs from irritating the stomach.
Film-Forming MaterialChitosan can serve as a film-forming material for film preparations, for the production of oral films, traditional Chinese medicine films and other film dosage forms. The relative molecular weight of chitosan has a prominent impact on its film-forming property and the performance of the prepared films:
generally, the lower the molecular weight, the lower the tensile strength and the higher the permeability of the film. Appropriate cross-linking agents can be selected to improve the mechanical strength of the film and modify its barrier properties.
