Vue d’ensemble

Mixed xylene is a mixture of o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene and ethylbenzene. When used as a chemical raw material, its individual isomers can be separated in advance. This mixture is mainly applied as a solvent for paints and coatings as well as an additive for aviation gasoline. It has a characteristic odor, is combustible, miscible with anhydrous ethanol, diethyl ether and chloroform, and practically insoluble in water. It is highly flammable; its vapor can form explosive mixtures with air, with a volumetric explosion limit of approximately 1% to 7%. It is of low toxicity, with an LC₅₀ (rat, inhalation) of 0.67% over 4 hours. The substance is irritating, and its vapor exhibits narcotic effects at high concentrations. It serves as a solvent, a reagent for determining water content in numerous organic compounds, and a cleaning agent for microscopes, silicon components, thermistors and other devices.
Application
Xylenes can be used as a solvent:
In the tetraphosphine/palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling with sterically hindered aryl halides and arylboronic acids to synthesize tri-ortho-substituted biaryl adducts.
For the N-alkylation of amines or ammonia with alcohols to synthesize N-alkyl amines.
To synthesize aromatic polyimides by reacting unsymmetric phosphinated diamines and dianhydrides via solution polymerization.
