DEAE-デキストランはデキストランのカチオン誘導体である。選択されたデキストラン画分にカチオン性（正電荷を帯びた）ジエチルアミノエチル基を導入することにより製造される。全てのバッチは分子量、置換度、乾燥減量がチェックされる。アラジンは4 kDaから2000 kDaまでのDEAE-デキストランを製造している。DEAE-デキストランは白色の吸湿性粉末として供給される。
構造
DEAE-デキストランは、DEAE-塩化物と反応させることにより、制御されたデキストラン画分から合成される。主な置換基は単一の第3級基（青色）であるが、これがさらに反応し、第3級アミンの他に第4級アミンを含む「タンデム」基を生成することもある。滴定曲線からその割合がわかります（データファイルのFig.2）。
応用
DEAE-デキストランは、ワクチンのアジュバント、トランスフェクション技術やウイルス感染性、タンパク質（酵素）の安定化など、様々な分野で使用されている。
