Panoramica
ABTS [2,2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt] is a commonly used chromogenic substrate. Upon reaction with potassium persulfate (K₂S₂O₈), it generates a stable blue-green ABTS⁺ radical cation, which exhibits a characteristic absorption maximum at 734 nm.
Based on this principle, the antioxidant capacity of a test substance can be evaluated by monitoring the decrease in absorbance at 734 nm: a reduction in absorbance indicates that the substance possesses free radical scavenging activity, i.e., antioxidant activity.
