Fludrocortisone-d5 is a labeled mineralcorticoid which can increase plasma fluid retention and volume. Structurally Fludrocortisone-d5 is identical to cortisol at every position except one hydrogen is replaced with a fluorine. Studies suggest that Fludrocortisone-d5 may sensitize vascular receptors to pressor amines. It has been observed that mineralcorticoids can increase the intracellular sodium concentration and decrease intracellular potassium. These studies suggest that Fludrocortisone-d5 alters the properties of adrenergic receptors as a result of a shift in intracellular cations.
