Overview

Reducing sugars are widely distributed in animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells. In plants, the main reducing sugars include glucose, fructose, and maltose, which are the most common monosaccharides and disaccharides. Among them, glucose and fructose not only serve as primary substrates for respiration but also act as precursors for the biosynthesis of sucrose, starch, and cellulose. This kit employs the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) colorimetric method for determination. Under heating conditions, DNS in alkaline solution reacts with reducing sugars to form a brownish-red amino compound, which exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 540 nm. Within a certain concentration range, the reducing sugar content is linearly proportional to the absorbance at 540 nm. Therefore, the reducing sugar content in the sample can be quantitatively calculated by constructing a standard curve.
