α-Citronellol can be used to synthesize α-citronellol esters of acetic acid and acetic anhydride through an esterification reaction mediated by lipases.
α-Citronellol is a type of monoterpene alcohol. It is one of the antifungal active components in the essential oil of the inter-leaf white mulberry (tea tree). The reaction rate constants of α-citronellol with OH free radicals and ozone are (1.9 ± 0.5) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 and (3.0 ± 0.2) × 10-16 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, respectively.
This compound belongs to the class of organic compounds known as menthane monoterpenoids. These are monoterpenoids with a structure based on the o-, m-, or p-menthane backbone. P-menthane consists of the cyclohexane ring with a methyl group and a (2-methyl)-propyl group at the 1 and 4 ring position, respectively. The o- and m- menthanes are much rarer, and presumably arise by alkyl migration of p-menthanes.
