CAS (Chrome Azurol S) Assay Solution is a bright-blue complex composed of chrome azurol sulphonate (CAS), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA), and ferric ions.
Detection Principle: When microorganisms secrete siderophores into the culture medium, siderophores possess higher affinity for ferric ions and competitively sequester ferric ions from the CAS-HDTMA-iron complex. This triggers structural changes in the complex, accompanied by a colour shift from bright blue to orange-yellow. Accordingly, CAS liquid medium can be applied for qualitative or semi-quantitative detection of siderophore-producing capacity in microorganisms.
