Bile salt is an organic sodium salt, which contains any conjugate of Bile acid with glycine or Taurine. Bile salts are composed of four different Bile acid: cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, Chenodeoxycholic acid and Lithocholic acid.
Bile salt is extracted from purified fresh bile under controlled conditions and can be used in bacterial culture medium. As a selective inhibitor in cell culture medium, it can isolate and identify pathogens. For example, MacConkey agar/broth.
Description
Bile salts may be used as one of the selective agents to prevent the growth of injuredEscherichia colicells, in an experiment done in order to identify the specific agent in the selective media which would inhibit the growth of the injuredEscherichia coliML30 cells. It may also be used for identification of isolates ofVibrio(Beneckea)vulnificuswhich is a halophilic bacterium, found responsible for causing several human infections.
