El Violeta de pirocatecol es un colorante indicador complexométrico. Este colorante de ftalina quela metales para formar complejos de color azul a azul-violeta. También es un indicador de pH con un intervalo de transición de 0 - 8 (rojo a violeta). Se sabe que es inestable cuando es alcalino. La estabilidad mejora con un pH neutro. Cuando el pH está entre 2-7 el color puede ser amarillo.
