Move

Mice and rats (or guinea pigs) are gavaged by attaching the gavage needle to the syringe and inhaling the liquid. Grab the skin on the back and neck of the rat with the left hand to fix the animal, hold the syringe with the right hand, insert the needle into the animal's mouth, press the palate with the gastric syringe so that the mouth and esophagus become a straight line, and then insert the needle into the esophagus along the posterior wall of the pharynx. The needle should be inserted without resistance. If resistance is felt or the animal struggles, the needle should be withdrawn and reinserted to avoid injury or puncture of the esophagus and accidental tracheal entry (Figure 1).

Figure 1

Generally when the gavage needle is inserted into the mouse 3 ~ 4cm, rats or guinea pigs 4 ~ 6cm can be injected into the drug. The commonly used volume of gavage is 0.2 to 1 ml for mice, 1 to 4 ml for rats, and 1 to 5 ml for guinea pigs.
