Hybridization and gene localization experiments in Escherichia coli

Summary

The E. coli chromosome is ring-shaped. High-frequency recombinant strains (Hfr) have the F factor integrated into their chromosomes, and the chromosomes of the Hfr cells (donor bacteria) are transferred from the Hfr cells into the F- cells when the Hfr bacteria undergo splicing (i.e., hybridization) with the F- bacterial cells.
