Principle

Midges belong to the family Diptera. Commonly known as "little bites". They are small insects 1-4 millimeters long. Blood-sucking midges (Culicoides), fine midges (Leptoconops) and midge (Lasiohelea) genus, collectively known as blood-sucking midges (biting midges). There are more than 400 known species of blood-sucking midges in China. Female midges often form groups to suck the blood of animals and people, and can spread diseases.

I. Adults:

1. Head: The head is subglobular, slightly wider than long. Pair of compound eyes, kidney-shaped. The two compound eyes of the male midge are close to each other, and the two compound eyes of the female midge are slightly farther apart. The antennae are filamentous, slender and 15-segmented. The mouthparts are stinging and sucking.

Thorax: It is divided into anterior, middle and posterior thorax, with a pair of wings in the middle thorax. The hind wings are reduced to balance rods, and the feet are slender.

Abdomen: 10 segments. Female midges have a pair of caudal whiskers at the end and male midges have external genitalia at the end.


II. Life history periods:

1. Eggs: fusiform or banana-shaped, about 0.35-0.65 × 0.04-0.07 mm in size.

Larvae: worm-like or caterpillar-like, up to 5-6 mm in length in the fourth instar, with a dark brown head, three segments on the thorax, ten segments on the abdomen, and the tenth segment retracted into the ninth.

3. Pupa: divided into cephalothorax and abdomen, body length about 2-5 mm.
