Morphological observation experiment of gadfly

Summary

This experiment is from the official website of Parasitology, School of Medicine, Shandong University.

Operation method

Morphological observation experiment of gadfly

Principle

Gadflies belong to the family Diptera. Often called "gadfly", it is a large blood-sucking insect. The body is stout, with a pair of large and shining compound eyes, and the body color is dark and hairy. It sucks blood from humans and animals and can transmit diseases (filariasis, anthrax, etc.).

Move

I. Adult: body length 6-30mm, stout, body color darker, more metallic luster.

1, Head: a pair of antennae, mostly three-segmented, with 3-7 small links on the third segment. Compound eyes occupy most of the head, the two eyes of female gadfly are separated by frontal band, while the two eyes of male gadfly are connected. There is one pair of tentacles, located on both sides of the mouthparts, divided into two segments, the first one is short and the second one is long, and the shape, color and hair color of the second segment are of identification significance. The mouthparts are characterized by a combination of stabbing and licking suction, and the skin is pierced during feeding to draw blood from the proposed trachea on the labellum. The male gadfly's mouthparts are degraded.

2. Thorax: The front, middle and hind thorax are not clearly demarcated. The wings are transparent or with color spots, also with cloud-like patterns, and the wing veins are neat. The feet are short, stout and hairy.

Abdomen: generally broad and flat. The male gadfly's abdomen is conical, the female gadfly's is more rounded, the abdomen can be seen in 7 segments, 8-11 segments become the external genitalia. The color and ornamentation of the abdomen are the identifying features of the species.

II. Life history periods:

1. Egg: fusiform in shape.

2. Larva: develops at the water's edge, light yellow or grayish-white, conical at both ends, thoracic part in three segments, abdomen divided into eight segments.

3. Pupa: outwardly shaped like a butterfly's chrysalis, brown in color, divided into head, thorax and abdomen.
