Blood can be taken from the marginal ear vein or the central ear artery. The skin on the surface of the blood vessel is first plucked, and the vessel is dilated by gently rubbing the rabbit's ear or applying alcohol to the skin. A syringe can be used to draw several milliliters of blood from the central ear artery. A needle can also be used to puncture the end of the marginal ear vein to obtain blood.
