TUNEL staining of tissue sections

Summary

Detection of apoptotic cells

Principle

When apoptosis occurs, chromosomal DNA double-strand breaks produce a large number of sticky 3'-OH ends, which can be labeled to the 3'-end of DNA by deoxyribonucleotide terminal transferase (TdT) and derivatives formed by fluorescein, peroxidase, alkaline phosphatase, or biotin to enable detection of apoptotic cells.
