Osteopontin (OPN) is a highly glycosylated and phosphorylated acidic multifunctional protein. It was originally named for its expression in bone, but it has since been found to be expressed in a wide variety of tissues and cells, including skin, kidney, blood vessels, and immune cells. Its major functions involve cell adhesion, migration, signal transduction, and immunomodulation. Osteopontin participates in various biological processes by binding to integrin receptors on the cell surface.
