La unión de IL-6 (IL-11) al IL-6 R (IL-11 R) soluble o anclado a la membrana inicia la asociación de IL-6 R (IL-11 R) con gp130, que entonces experimenta la homodimerización y la transducción de señales. Con otras citocinas de la familia IL-6, como LIF y OSM, la transducción de señales se desencadena por la hetero-dimerización de gp130 y LIF R u OSM R. Gp130 se expresa en todos los órganos examinados. En el suero humano se ha detectado la presencia de gp130 soluble, que aparentemente procede de la escisión proteolítica o del receptor unido a la membrana o del splicing alternativo.
