El EDTA es un inhibidor de las metaloproteasas, a concentraciones efectivas de 1-10 mM. El EDTA actúa como quelante del ion cinc en el sitio activo de las metaloproteasas, y también puede inhibir otras proteasas dependientes de iones metálicos, como las cisteína proteasas dependientes del calcio. Para su uso como anticoagulante, las sales disódicas o tripotásicas del EDTA son las más utilizadas. La concentración óptima es de 1,5 mg por ml de sangre.
