Overview

4-methylphenylethyl ammonium iodide (4-mepeai) is a new perovskite precursor. The presence of a methyl group at the 4-position of the organic spacer cation phenylethyl ammonium (PEA) brings the following improvements:

1) The electricity of methyl group will increase the electron density on amine and enhance the molecular dipole, thus increasing the interaction between ammonium and halide anion. This may improve the formation kinetics of quasi two-dimensional perovskite films and produce better films with full coverage and larger grains.

2) The presence of methyl group at position 4 will lead to a more uniform spatial distribution of organic cations in the quasi two-dimensional perovskite precursor solution and the resulting film. The quasi two-dimensional Perovskite Thin film may have a more uniform energy landscape, thus significantly improving the carrier transport performance.

3) The presence of methyl group at position 4 will increase the lipophilic property of phenylethyl moiety. This increased lipophilicity will enhance the hydrophobicity of the quasi two-dimensional perovskite film and further improve the moisture stability of the device.
