Calcium is a stable divalent cation with both beneficial and toxic properties in cell culture media, and can be used as an ingredient in a variety of cell culture media. Calcium is involved in many important cellular functions, including enzyme activity, adhesion, migration, tissue morphology, metabolic processes, signal transduction, replication, and the electrochemical reactions of specialized cells such as muscle and nerve cells. It is primarily stored in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Proteins that bind calcium within the ER lumen include protein disulfide isomerases, calreticulin, endoplasmic reticulum proteins, and reticular cadherins. Cells also contain many non-ER lumen calcium-binding proteins that mediate cellular activities and signaling cascades. Examples of these proteins include calbindin, troponin C, calmodulin, and S-100 proteins. A 0.17M calcium chloride solution, sterile, can be used as a calcium ion additive to cell culture media to adjust the concentration of calcium ions in the medium. Usage: Add according to the desired concentration. Scope of use: Suitable for general biological and medical research.
