Vue d’ensemble

EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid) is an excellent hexadentate chelating agent containing six coordination atoms capable of forming stable chelate complexes with metal ions. It is widely used in complexometric titration for the determination of metal ion content, and in biological applications, it is commonly employed to eliminate interference from transition metal ions such as iron (III), nickel (II), and manganese (II), without affecting protein function. EDTA is soluble in sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and ammonia solutions, as well as in 160 volumes of boiling water. It is sparingly soluble in cold water but soluble in ethanol, acetone, and certain organic solvents. Since its alkali metal salts are readily water-soluble, the disodium salt (EDTA·2Na) is commonly used in place of EDTA in laboratory settings. Methyl red is added to EDTA solutions as a pH indicator, with a color transition range of pH 4.4 (red) to 6.2 (yellow). This product is an EDTA-Methyl Red solution (0.1 mol/L), prepared with EDTA·2Na and supplemented with a specific amount of methyl red in 60% ethanol solution, followed by autoclave sterilization. It is a commonly used reagent in molecular biology. For research use only. Not for other applications.
