Protamine Sulfate is a naturally occurring basic protein sulfate derived from the mature spermatozoa of fish, predominantly of the Salmonidae family. The protein is characterized by a high arginine content, which imparts its strongly basic properties. The neutralization mechanism is based on the high-affinity electrostatic binding between the cationic guanidinium groups of protamine and the anionic sulfate and carboxylate groups of heparin, resulting in the formation of stable stoichiometric ionic complexes. This interaction effectively sequesters heparin and abrogates its anticoagulant activity. The product is available as a ready-to-use 1% (w/v) solution.
