Cytochrome P450 Reductase (bacterial), abbreviated as CPR, is an essential component of the cytochrome P450 (CYPs) system. As a microsomal flavoprotein complex containing FAD and FMN as prosthetic groups, CPR is predominantly distributed in the liver in humans.Functioning as a physiologically important coenzyme in mammals, CPR acts as an electron donor not only for cytochrome P450, heme oxygenase and squalene monooxygenase, but also for 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase, cytochrome b5, as well as other enzymes involved in sterol synthesis, fatty acid desaturation and elongation pathways.The electron transfer reaction between CPR and CYP serves as the rate-limiting step of CYP redox reactions, and CPR plays a vital role in drug metabolism.
