A novel nuclear localization of β-dystroglycan has been identified, and its phosphorylated form may participate in nuclear functions. In the non-phosphorylated state, only the full-length 43 kDa β-dystroglycan enters the nucleus, while the 26 kDa fragment remains in the cytoplasm. Upon tyrosine phosphorylation, β-dystroglycan not only shows increased nuclear accumulation but also exhibits multiple molecular weight species (likely due to degradation or post-translational modifications), including newly identified 17 kDa and 50 kDa fragments in addition to the previously reported forms. These findings suggest that phosphorylation regulates the subcellular localization and processing of dystroglycan.(PMID: 24077328; 14678802; 18458097; 17255331)
