Serum iron refers to the iron bound to transferrin in the blood, and this indicator is commonly used to differentiate between iron-deficiency anemia and non-iron-deficiency anemia.
Assay Principle: Sodium sulfite reduces ferric iron (Fe³⁺) in serum to ferrous iron (Fe²⁺). Fe²⁺ then reacts with 2,2'-bipyridine to develop a color. The resulting complex exhibits an absorption peak at 520 nm, and the serum iron content can be calculated by measuring the absorbance at this wavelength.
