Carbonylgruppen sind in Proteinen zu finden, die oxidativem Stress ausgesetzt sind. Viele kleine natürliche Moleküle sind ebenfalls Carbonylverbindungen. Die meisten Saccharide sowie RNAs enthalten 1,2-Diol-Fragmente, die mit Periodat zu Aldehyden oxidiert werden können, die wiederum mit Hydraziden reagieren.
