Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) is a widely used basal medium for the culture of a variety of mammalian cells, including primary fibroblasts, neurons, glial cells, HUVECs and smooth muscle cells, as well as cell lines such as HeLa, 293, Cos‑7 and PC‑12. Developed on the basis of MEM medium, DMEM contains twice the concentration of amino acids and four times the concentration of vitamins compared with MEM. It is additionally supplemented with non‑essential amino acids, trace iron ions and sodium pyruvate.
DMEM was originally formulated as a low‑glucose version with a glucose concentration of 1000 mg/L. A high‑glucose variant containing 4500 mg/L glucose was subsequently developed and is now widely adopted for diverse cell culture applications. Glucose‑free DMEM allows users to adjust glucose concentrations according to research requirements, offering flexible usage.
Sodium pyruvate serves as an alternative carbon source in cell culture, enabling cellular metabolism even under glucose‑deprived conditions. Sodium pyruvate‑free medium permits researchers to modulate sodium pyruvate levels to control carbon availability for cellular metabolism.
Contains: Phenol Red, L‑Glutamine.
Does not contain: D‑Glucose, Sodium Pyruvate, HEPES.
