Exo-β-1,4-glucanase (C1, EC 3.2.1.91) is found in fungi and animals and is one of the components of the cellulase system. C1 catalyzes the release of cellobiose and glucose from the non-reducing ends of polysaccharide chains. This product is suitable for detecting soil samples. In this kit, the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method is employed to determine the content of reducing sugars produced by C1-catalyzed degradation of microcrystalline cellulose. The resulting reddish-brown amino compound has a characteristic light absorption at 540 nm. Within a certain range, the rate of increase in absorbance at 540 nm is proportional to the C1 activity.
