Protamine Sulfate is a naturally occurring basic protein sulfate derived from the mature spermatozoa of fish, predominantly of the Salmonidae family. The protein is characterized by a high arginine content (approximately 67% of total amino acid residues), which confers a strongly basic nature and a high positive charge density. Its neutralization mechanism is based on high-affinity electrostatic interactions between the cationic guanidinium groups of protamine and the anionic sulfate and carboxylate groups of heparin, resulting in the formation of stable stoichiometric ionic complexes. This interaction effectively sequesters heparin and abrogates its antithrombin activity. The product is available as a ready-to-use 10% (w/v) high-concentration solution.
