Sodium deoxycholate (also known as sodium desoxycholate, CAS: 302-95-4, molecular weight: 414.55) is an ionic surfactant (detergent) and a commonly used biochemical reagent. This product is a 1% sodium deoxycholate solution adjusted to pH 7.0, ready for immediate use. Sodium deoxycholate can be used for cell lysis, solubilization of poorly soluble proteins, and is also applied in the bile solubility test. Bile salts, due to their surfactant properties, can activate bacterial autolytic enzymes, accelerating the autolysis of susceptible organisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. The bile solubility test is interpreted as follows: in the agar plate method, colony disappearance indicates a positive result; in the tube method, clearing of the bile-containing culture while the control tube remains turbid indicates a positive result. S. pneumoniae is positive in the bile solubility test, while other alpha-hemolytic streptococci (e.g., viridans group streptococci) are negative, making this test useful for species identification. Note: This product is a surfactant; avoid vigorous shaking to prevent excessive foaming. It is irritant; wear gloves during handling and avoid contact with skin and mucous membranes.
