Sodium deoxycholate (also designated as sodium desoxycholate; CAS No.: 302-95-4; molecular weight: 414.55) is a widely utilized ionic detergent in biological experimentation. This product is supplied as a 10% aqueous solution of sodium deoxycholate, with the pH adjusted to 7.0, ensuring consistent purity and a balanced formulation that is compatible with a broad range of biochemical and microbiological applications. This solution effectively disrupts cellular membranes and facilitates the solubilization of poorly soluble membrane-associated and hydrophobic proteins, and is therefore extensively employed in protein extraction and sample lysis protocols. Moreover, it serves as the recommended reagent for the bile solubility test. Due to its superior surfactant properties, the bile salt rapidly activates bacterial autolytic enzymes, specifically promoting the autolysis of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The test outcome can be precisely interpreted by monitoring changes in solution clarity, rendering this assay valuable for the identification of streptococcal species. In comparison to unadjusted pH formulations, this product maintains a stable pH optimally suited for autolysin activity, thereby enhancing experimental reproducibility and accuracy. This product is an irritant and, being a surfactant, vigorous shaking may result in persistent foaming. Avoid vigorous agitation during handling. Appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves) should be worn, and contact with skin and mucous membranes must be avoided. For research purposes exclusively.
