Overview
Oxygen free radicals attack unsaturated fatty acids in lipids, generating lipid peroxides, which are further decomposed into a series of complex products, including malondialdehyde (MDA). Therefore, the MDA content can be used to reflect the level of lipid peroxidation in a sample. The principle of this kit is based on the condensation reaction between MDA and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) under acidic and high-temperature conditions, forming a brownish-red trimethine chromophore (3,5,5-trimethyloxazolidine-2,4-dione), which exhibits a maximum absorbance peak at 532 nm. Simultaneously, the absorbance at 600 nm is measured to correct for interference from sucrose. The MDA content in the sample is calculated from the difference in absorbance between 532 nm and 600 nm.
