Overview
Nitrate nitrogen refers to the nitrogen element contained in nitrates. Organic matter in soil decomposes to form ammonium salts, which are converted into nitrate nitrogen after oxidation. As one of the major nitrogen forms absorbed by higher plants, soil nitrate nitrogen directly affects crop yield and quality.
Nitrate ions in soil extract exhibit distinct absorbance at 220 nm and show no characteristic absorption at 275 nm. The absorbance of soil extract measured at 275 nm is multiplied by a correction factor f to eliminate the interference of light absorption by organic matter at 220 nm. Based on this value, the content of nitrate nitrogen in soil can be calculated.
