Overview

Catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6) is a common antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to water and oxygen. It is ubiquitously present in aerobic cells containing cytochrome systems. Hydrogen peroxide is highly toxic to cells; its accumulation can cause oxidative damage to cellular targets such as DNA, proteins, and lipids, thereby inducing mutations and cell death. Catalase prevents oxidative damage by scavenging intracellular H₂O₂. Currently, the role of catalase in oxidative stress-related diseases has been extensively studied. This kit utilizes the peroxidase activity of catalase to determine its activity. In the presence of an appropriate concentration of H₂O₂, catalase catalyzes the reaction of methanol to generate formaldehyde. The formaldehyde then reacts with a chromogenic reagent to form a colored product, which exhibits a characteristic absorbance peak at 540 nm. The catalase activity in the sample is directly proportional to the absorbance value (OD₅₄₀).
