Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) is a colorless, transparent liquid found in the ventricles of the brain, the subarachnoid space, and the central canal of the spinal cord. It is produced by the choroid plexus in the ventricles and has properties similar to plasma and lymph. A normal adult has approximately 100–150 mL of CSF, which is slightly alkaline, contains no red blood cells, and has specific chemical components and pressure. It plays an important role in maintaining the relative stability of intracranial pressure. When the central nervous system is damaged, CSF testing becomes an important auxiliary diagnostic tool.
Detection Principle
Globulins in cerebrospinal fluid bind with phenol to form insoluble protein salts, which precipitate and produce a white turbidity or sediment. This test is also known as the Pandy test and is commonly used for qualitative protein testing in human or animal cerebrospinal fluid. This kit is for research use only and is not suitable for clinical diagnosis or other purposes.
Operating Steps (For Reference Only)
1. Take a small test tube and add 2–3 mL of Pandy Reagent.
2. Add 1–2 drops (approximately 0.05–0.1 mL) of cerebrospinal fluid, mix well, and immediately observe against a black background.
Result Interpretation
Negative | Clear and transparent, no haze. |
Very Weakly Positive (±) | Slight white haze, visible only against a black background. |
Positive (+) | Grayish-white, cloudy. |
(2+) | White turbidity. |
(3+) | White, thick flocculent precipitate. |
(4+) | White coagulum. |
Precautions
1. Samples should be sent for testing immediately after collection, generally within 1 hour.
2. Normally, results are mostly negative or very weakly positive. Positive reactions may indicate brain or cerebrospinal disorders.
3. Please use the reagent as soon as possible after opening to avoid affecting subsequent experimental results.
