Overview

RPMI (Roswell Park Memorial Institute) 1640 medium was originally developed for the suspension and monolayer culture of human leukemia cells, and has since been shown to be suitable for a variety of mammalian cells, including HeLa, Jurkat, MCF‑7, PC12, PBMCs, astrocytes, and numerous cancer cell lines. The distinctive features of this medium compared to other basal media are its content of reduced glutathione and high concentrations of vitamins (including biotin, vitamin B₁₂, and PABA, which are absent from MEM or DMEM), as well as its particularly abundant levels of inositol and choline. RPMI 1640 employs a sodium bicarbonate buffering system (2.0 g/L) and requires a 5%–10% CO₂ atmosphere to maintain physiological pH. This product contains no antibiotics or antimycotics. The concentrations of its basal components are as follows: D‑Glucose:  4000 mg/L L‑Glutamine:  600 mg/L Sodium Bicarbonate:  2000 mg/L The final pH of the product is 7.0–7.4. This medium contains no proteins, lipids, or growth factors; therefore, additional supplements (typically 10% fetal bovine serum) must be added during use to meet cellular growth requirements. Precautions 1. This product has been sterilized by filtration. Please practice aseptic techniques during handling to avoid contamination. 2. To maintain optimal performance, avoid repeated freeze‑thaw cycles. 3. This product is for research use only (or for further investigative purposes) and is not intended for diagnostic or therapeutic applications.
