Soil polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is a class of oxidoreductases with copper and manganese as the active centers. It is mainly derived from soil microorganisms, plant root exudates, and enzymes released during the decomposition of animal and plant residues. This enzyme is capable of oxidizing aromatic compounds in the soil to quinones, which further react with substances such as proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, and minerals in the soil to generate organic matter and pigments of various molecular weights, thereby completing the cycling of aromatic compounds in the soil. It can also be applied in soil environmental remediation. This kit employs L-DOPA as the substrate, and PPO catalyzes the oxidation of the substrate to generate a red quinone product, which exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 475 nm. By measuring the increase in absorbance at this wavelength, the PPO enzyme activity in soil samples can be accurately calculated.
