Carbohydrates are one of the important components of animal and plant tissues, and serve as both primary metabolites and storage substances. Total sugar mainly includes reducing sugars such as glucose, fructose, and lactose; disaccharides such as sucrose and maltose, which can be hydrolyzed to reducing monosaccharides under the assay conditions; and starches that may be partially hydrolyzed. This product is suitable for the determination of total sugar content in animal and plant tissues, as well as in liquid samples such as serum and plasma. The assay principle is as follows: Total sugars are first hydrolyzed to reducing sugars. The reducing sugars are then heated with DNS reagent under alkaline conditions, reducing DNS to an amino compound, which appears reddish‑brown in alkaline solution and exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 540 nm. Within a certain concentration range, the reducing sugar content is linearly correlated with the absorbance at 540 nm. The total sugar content in the sample can be calculated using a standard curve.
