Overview
Creatine kinase (CK, EC 2.7.3.2) is predominantly distributed in tissues such as the heart, skeletal muscle, and brain. It reversibly catalyzes the phosphoryl transfer reaction between creatine and ATP, playing a crucial role in energy transport, muscle contraction, and ATP regeneration. The enzyme catalyzes the conversion of ATP and creatine to phosphocreatine and ADP. Phosphocreatine is rapidly and completely hydrolyzed to phosphate, whereas ATP and ADP remain stable. The CK activity can be calculated by determining the amount of phosphate released from the hydrolysis of phosphocreatine using a phosphate determination reagent.
