Overview

Zn(II) Mesoporphyrin IX is a synthetic porphyrin complex in which a zinc ion is coordinated in the center of the mesoporphyrin IX structure. Mesoporphyrin IX is a derivative of heme, the iron-containing porphyrin complex that forms an essential part of hemoglobin. In Zn(II) Mesoporphyrin IX, the iron normally found in the heme is replaced by zinc, significantly altering the compound′s properties and potential applications. Zinc porphyrins typically show strong absorbance in the visible range, making them useful as dyes or indicators. They are also explored in applications that require light absorption, such as solar energy capture. Zn(II) Mesoporphyrin IX can be used as a photosensitizer. The compound is activated by light of a specific wavelength, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species that can kill cells or microbes locally.
