4,8-Dimethyl-2-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane is a clear, colorless, air-sensitive liquid with a lemon-like odor and a boiling point of 120 °C. 4,8-Dimethyl-2 phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane is a powerful reducing agent and must be handled under an inert atmosphere.
4,8-Dimethyl-2-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane  finds application mainly as a building block for other phosphine derivatives, which are used as ligands in various homogeneous catalytic processes.

Purpose:

1. 4,8-Dimethyl-2-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane is used to synthesize hindered tertiary phosphines via the addition of an olefin using free radical initiators.
2. These tertiary phosphines have been used as ligands for cobalt-catalyzed hydroformylation.
3. 4,8-Dimethyl-2-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane can also be used to make bidentate phosphine ligands by its’ reaction with dihaloorganics, such as dibromo-oxylene, the palladium complexes of these ligands finding utility as catalysts.
