Overview
Ferrous ions (Fe²⁺) react with Ferrozine to form a stable purple‑red complex, which exhibits maximum absorption at a wavelength of 562 nm. When a chelating agent is present in the sample, it preferentially binds to Fe²⁺, thereby reducing the amount of free Fe²⁺ available to react with the chromogenic reagent, and consequently decreasing the absorbance of the colorimetric reaction system. Based on the absorbance of the sample at 562 nm, the chelating ability toward ferrous ions can be evaluated.
