Magnesium is an activator of numerous enzymes, such as phosphatases, creatine kinase, hexokinase, and carboxylases, and is also essential for maintaining the structural integrity of macromolecules including DNA, RNA, and ribosomes. In addition, it plays a crucial role in maintaining normal neurological and muscular functions. Deviation of serum magnesium concentration from the normal range is closely associated with certain renal and endocrine disorders. This product is suitable for the determination of magnesium ions in serum or plasma samples. The detection principle is as follows: In an alkaline medium, magnesium ions combine with hydroxide ions to form a magnesium hydroxide colloid, which further reacts with Titan yellow to produce an orange‑red product. At 540 nm, the absorbance of this product is directly proportional to the magnesium concentration within a defined range.
