Overview
γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a four-carbon, non-proteinogenic amino acid widely present in plants, animals, and microorganisms. In plants, GABA is primarily synthesized via the decarboxylation of L-glutamate catalyzed by the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase. In the mammalian brain, GABA serves as a potent inhibitory neurotransmitter. It exhibits various physiological effects, such as lowering blood pressure, enhancing brain activity, nourishing nerve cells, promoting neural calmness, stimulating growth hormone secretion, and supporting liver and kidney function. Consequently, GABA has found extensive applications in pharmaceuticals and health food products. GABA reacts with phenol and sodium hypochlorite to produce a blue-green colored product, which exhibits maximum absorbance at 640 nm.
