Albumin

Albumin is a naturally occurring protein in plasma that plays a key role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and protecting cells, in addition to providing basic nutritional support in cell culture systems. It supports cell growth, regulates the culture environment, and mitigates external stress-induced damage, making it an indispensable component for both sensitive and industrial cell lines.

Nutritional support: Provides nitrogen sources and essential amino acids, while transporting small-molecule nutrients to enhance metabolic efficiency.

Culture environment regulation: Maintains osmotic pressure and pH stability to ensure cellular homeostasis.

Cell protection: Promotes cell adhesion and growth, alleviating oxidative stress and mechanical damage.

Antioxidant function: Binds fatty acids and antioxidant small molecules, chelates metal ions, and protects cells from oxidative damage.

Molecular transport: Carries hydrophobic molecules, fatty acids, and trace elements (e.g., zinc, magnesium), enhancing bioavailability and supporting cellular functions.

In the biopharmaceutical field, serum-free media have become the widely adopted standard for industrial production of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins, with albumin serving as a core component of these systems. Compared to traditional serum-containing media, which are prone to batch-to-batch variability and contamination risk, albumin not only provides stable nutrition but also reduces safety concerns associated with animal-derived components, thereby improving the controllability and quality of bioproducts.

The value of albumin extends far beyond cell culture, making it a versatile tool in the biopharmaceutical industry:

Biomanufacturing: Maintains cell health and enhances the production efficiency of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins in CHO and hybridoma cell cultures.

Drug delivery: Serves as a natural carrier, prolonging circulation time and improving therapeutic efficacy.

Tissue engineering: Incorporated into scaffolds, it enables gradual release of nutrients and growth factors, promoting the development of artificial tissues and offering new possibilities for organ transplantation.
